Entry 4:
Argument structure and fallacies

Item 1:

Sam is riding her bike in her home town in Maine, minding her own business. A station wagon comes up behind her and the driver starts beeping his horn and then tries to force her off the road. As he goes by, the driver yells “get on the sidewalk where you belong!” Sam sees that the car has Ohio plates and concludes that all Ohio drivers are jerks.
Structure fallacy
Jerk persons are people who jell at others
An Ohio driver yells at other
è All Ohio drivers are jerks.
Content fallacy: Hasty generalization
Sam just based on an Ohio driver who yells at other on the road, and then he concludes that all Ohio drivers are jerks.
Item 2: The video

In the video, two friends talk each other. The brown-haired guy is feeling down because he thinks that his girlfriend is going to break up with him due to the fact that she doesn’t reply his message. And he thinks that he will fall into deep depression and stay home for 5 years.
Structure fallacy
If she doesn’t reply the message
Insufficient to conclude that
Their connection is fading away
Insufficient to conclude that
She will forget about him and fall in love with her Spanish tango instructor
Insufficient to conclude that
He will fall into deep depression and stay home for 5 years.
è He will weigh pounds and a wrestler will take him for his competition.
Analysis
Fallacy of presumption: Slippery slope
When the man’s girlfriend doesn’t reply his message, it doesn’t mean that she is going to break up with him, she may be busy, have no service. So all the premises after the first premise is insufficient, thus the conclusion is also incorrect.
Item 3: Pictures.

Analysis: The picture offers only two options:
Loving the country
Leaving it
In fact there are many others options to be made.
For example:
Leave but still love the country: Many American people now living in the oversea but their patriotism never changes.
