Identifying Bias
ITEM 1:
- Discrimination
- Analysis:
- Analysis:
Message: Gender difference makes (or explains) the difference in pay in our society.
The picture shows gender inequality in our society (sexual discrimination - sexism in workplace). Gender matters especially in the workplace. For example, a male will get a higher earning salary than a female who both hold the same position, have the same experience and are the same age.
ITEM 2:
- Prejudice
- Analysis:
The picture directly expresses gender bias. In the first picture, the male student is telling another male student that he, as an individual, is awful at math. In the second picture, the male student is telling a female student that girls are awful at math. He not only said she did not do well, but all girls are bad at math. He assumes all girls are bad at math, and quickly placed this female student in that category. She might be very good at math, and just made an error on this problem. It is not justified to judge a person based on their gender.
ITEM 3:
- Scapegoating
- Analysis:
The picture shows the negative attitude of native habitants toward the immigrants. When the natives lost their job without knowing the real reason, they blame the immigrants for that. They think that the immigrants hold all responsible for that. (it's all your fault)

I think item 3 is scapegoating and prejudice.
Trả lờiXóaThanks for your comment. However, you can see the Pyramid in textbooks on page 65. The Pyramid shows biases, growing in complexity from the bottom to the top. Like a pyramid, the upper levels are supported by the lower levels. Thus, in item 3, I think the answer is just scapegoating. Hope to get feedback from you. Have a nice day.
